Keeping It Real: The Cost of Sweeping Issues Under the Carpet

Your best performer might be someone the business cannot afford, especially if everyone else has to work around them. A toxic high performer is one of the hardest leadership problems, because the results are real and so is the damage.

They bring in the majority of sales, know the systems, or hold the key customer relationships. They also dismiss colleagues, ignore processes, and leave other people cleaning up the mess.

The Leadership Dilemma With a Toxic High Performer

The dilemma is uncomfortable. Leadership can challenge the person delivering results, or protect the numbers and tolerate the behavior.

“That’s just how they are” sounds like acceptance. It is also a decision about who carries the cost.

Count the Full Cost of a Toxic High Performer

Individual results are only one side of the ledger. Look beyond them and count the rework, the management time, and the customer recovery. Count the capable colleagues who stop contributing because their input gets steamrolled.

From a CFO perspective, the question is whether that person creates value after accounting for the disruption around them. Revenue tells only part of the story.

Keeping It Real Does Not Mean Humiliating Anyone

Addressing the problem does not mean humiliating the person or rushing to dismissal. It means naming the behavior, explaining its impact, setting clear expectations, and following through.

Give them a fair opportunity to change. Then stop asking everyone else to absorb the problem indefinitely.

Where Would You Draw the Line?

Where is the line for a high performer whose behavior undermines the team? The right answer may be coaching, tighter boundaries, or separation, and it depends on the person, the evidence, and how the business responds when expectations are set and followed through.
